A Living History, San Antonio

My thesis is a photographic documentary project. My subjects are ordinary folk with ordinary stories. They combine to create an extraordinary community, the city of San Antonio. For this project, I have sought to photograph individuals and events to create a living history of my city before it inevitably changes.

Families engaged in crafting products for niche markets and individuals who have made a significant contribution in developing and maintaining the cultural identity integral to the nature of San Antonio are the focus.

The photographs in this series are individual portraits of San Antonians. Though the portraits are not literally of me, I believe my art is, in some respects, self-portraiture. As a fifth-generation Texan, I am proud to call San Antonio home. I am a product of the culture. My desire was to record facets of my culture that are ever changing, some nearing the point of extinction.

My expression is my ability to connect with strangers to capture a moment of pride, joy or contemplation.
